Menu Plan for December 15th, 2008



For the last 3 or so days I have had a nagging headache on and off. Last night (after sympathizing-but not emphathizing- with a friend at church whose husband suffers from nasty migraines) I got what I think is my first real migraine. Possibly pregnancy induced? Not sure. I thought I would sleep it off. Nope...got worse over night so that I couldn't function this morning.

Poor hubby took pity on me and took our fussy daughter with him to the store and got some Tylenol for me before heading off to work. He's the best:) Now the tylenol is finally kicking in and I actually put dinner in the crockpot and started a load of laundry...yay! The headache/migraine is still here, but I can actually walk around the house for a few minutes without wanting to die:) Any advice for other pregnancy-safe ways to cope with migraines?

Now on to the meal plan:

Breakfasts: Looking for gingerbread pancake, waffle or muffin recipes that don't use molasses because I don't have any and I stil want to make these:), cold cereal, pancakes made with half store-bought white flour baking mix and half homemade whole wheat baking mix

Lunches: leftovers

Monday: Crockpot winter veggies (sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, onions) and honey mustard chicken (my own creation...we'll see how it turns out:)

Tuesday: Pasta Carbonara and salad

Wednesday: Mexican Casserole and Salad

Thursday: Baked Ziti Casserole with Green Beans

Friday: Homemade Pizza and Carrot sticks and other snacky foods

Saturday: Hearty Ham Casserole and mixed veggies

Sunday: Meatballs over rice and broccoli

I'm not pregnant, but my migraines are hormone-induced! I just started getting them about 10 times per year or so over the past 3-4 years.

My best advice is to lay still in a dark room with no noise. An icepack or cold wash cloth over the eyes or sometimes even the top of the head! It does seem to work. No medication touches them.

Thanks Sherry! I was blessed with a looooong nap by my daughter this morning so I laid in the semi-dark for quite awhile. You are right about medication not touching this...after I wrote the blog post I had to go lay right back down and have only had a few snippets of time where I can get up today. Hoping it will go away soon! I am sorry to hear about your migraines...10 per year must be so hard to deal with! Thanks again for the advice:)

I have had migraines off and on, some while pregnant, but thankfully not too many! The things that help me the most when I FIRST feel one coming on are;
1. drink some water
2. eat a little
3. take Tylenol or Advil
4. try to avoid bright lights
5. rest (with eyes closed, if possible)

These must be done at the first sign of a migraine because once one sets in, I've never been able to do anything other than wait it out. I was able to do these steps pretty easily with baby #1 and thankfully I've only had one with baby #2 because the resting part is much more difficult now :)

As for preventing them the best things I've found are to make sure I'm drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and I think stress can bring them on too.

I have not had migraines in pregnancy, but googled it and seems many do. But headaches, from what I"m reading, can also be a sign of high blood pressure/preeclampsia, so I would think it would be wise to at least run your symptoms by your midwife/doctor. I did get headaches this last pregnancy, and I'm pretty sure they were all dehydration induced, so watch the water intake!
